The tatami chair’s back is formed of a piece of precompressed ash. The precompressed process allows the wood to bent in several planes when it is wet. When the formed back is dried the wood regains its original strength. The shaped ash back provides good, resilient back support. The inspiration for the tatami chair’s sculptural back comes from the beautiful kimonos worn by Japanese women, particulary the design which includes the “obi”, the sash that is wound and The Tatami Chair “Eri” – A Japanese Bow.
Danish furniture design enjoys great recognition in Japan – the aspects of minimalism and details as well as the great level of preparation correspond very well with the Japanese mentality and the country´s demand for quality. However, even though there exist similarities between Japanese and Danish design it takes more than just international understanding to design a piece of furniture for decoration in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony houses.
